In my last attempts I had something which worked in Firefox but not in Codepen (!). I think I
then messed up the Codepen demo fairly comprehensively trying to get it to work.
I've been on other things these last couple of days, but hope to be back on
this soon.

Given your current mark-up, the right column overlaps (covers) the left column,
making any click through (on the select) impossible, try giving `fieldset ul {
background: red; }` to see what I mean.
First step, as Karl notes, use a `<li>` to wrap you text in. That is more valid
html anyway.
