Well, the database is running on a University server, which I have no problem accessing through phpMyAdmin or other database frontend tools. The MySQL driver jar is in server/default/lib. I'm not sure that I have access to the MySQL logs. I guess I could try making this work on a local database.

Thanks for the pointer, I will investigate in that direction.

- do you have your mysql driver in your server lib directory?
- is mysql configured to give you access?
- what does your mysql log say?
