We use both. The wire ones in the Brodart shelving had been redesigned and
are pretty good. We use only the long ones. We use TALL cork bottomed ones
selectively where either the books are too heavy for just the wire (such as
art books) or where the collection is too short (a run of paperbacks). We
have found that the wire works well. We have similar problems whether or not
we use wire or cork bottomed stands-patrons not tightening the shelves (but
do they know to do that?) affects both types of bookstands.

Subject: Bookends: an opinion

In response to the question from Judy Merritt and the comment from Deanna
Frazee regarding bookends, I don't think the wire ones that attach to the
undersides of shelves are the best choice. My personal favorite is the
standard bookend with a cork bottom. These are availabie in different sizes
and colors, and don't slip like the felt-bottomed ones do. If you have metal
shelving, try these & see if you don't agree.
(My 2 cents worth on a Monday morning!)
