My old library was near a petroleum plant, and we assumed the gases
deterioted the cork bottoms on the bookends. A local gasket company sold us
sheets of cork used in the big engines, cheap. 1 square yard for $3. We
used volunteers to cut out bottoms and rubber cement to glue the new bottoms
on. Worked very well and much cheaper than the precut ones from Demco, etc.

I personally like the wire bookends--as long as you get the right ones for
your brand of shelving and everyone learns how to use them. Takes a light
squeeze to move them, for me easier than lifting the books to slide the
other under(which many people don't-which causes damage to the book as well)
