The Texas Library Association Centennial Celebration group is looking for
some fun-loving volunteers to help with their projects during the TLA
conference in Dallas next spring, April 23-26, 2002. If you can help,
please contact one of the following people by November 1, 2001:
Terry Vermillion, Manager, South Branch/Denton Public Library
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Chris O'Brien, Trinity Episcopal School, Marshall

Read on for the particulars . . . The only question not addressed is
whether male volunteers are also required to wear "Gibson Girl" costumes.
Thanks,
Sharon

Greetings,

The TLA Centennial Celebration committee needs your assistance to help make
next year's planned Centennial Park (Centennial Theme Lounge) at annual
conference a success. A sub-committee within the Centennial committee is
responsible for arranging staffing in the 1902 Centennial Theme Lounge that
will be constructed on the exhibits floor at annual conference in April, and
we are asking for volunteers to provide each of the following:

Dress in period costume, the "Gibson Girl" look, and serve in the 1902
Library Reading Room, welcoming visitors and informing them of the latest
world news (the news from 1902, that is);

Find 1902 news articles/stories/clippings and make tip sheets for the
"Gibson Girls" to use while they are serving in the 1902 Library Reading
Room;

Hold a Story Hour, reading stories to conference attendees at the 1902 book
wagon (the precursor to the bookmobile);

Stroll throughout the convention center in period costume, promoting the
1902 Centennial Theme Park to conference attendees.

The sub-committee chairs are suggesting a total four-hour commitment from
each volunteer who is willing to dress in period costume, with part of that
time spent in the 1902 Library Reading Room, part providing the Story Hour
at the book wagon (optional - reserved for those who enjoy reading aloud to
others) and part strolling about the conference, promoting the Theme Park.
TLA cannot offset the costs of the period dress, but garments are available
for rent in costume shops. In Denton, for example, the entire costume,
including hat and shoes, is available for under $50.00.

Volunteers willing to provide the research for the 1902 news
article/stories/clippings, and to make the tip sheets for the "Gibson Girls"
to use while working in the Library Reading Room, may find that more than a
four-hour commitment is necessary.

When scheduling you to serve a time slot in the Theme Park, the
sub-committee chairs will work around your conference session attendance
and/or program presentation schedule! If you are interested in being
involved with this fun project, please contact Terry Vermillion or Chris
O'Brien at the addresses listed above by November 1st.

Thank you so much for your consideration and assistance with the TLA
Centennial Celebration! We look forward to hearing from you.

Terry Vermillion
