Subject: What we stand for

At our monthly meeting, county librarian John Adams said a few words about
Tuesday's tragedy. I would like to summarize them, not nearly as elegantly
as spoken by John.

The hijackers were willing to die for their beliefs and their point of view,
which is one intolerant of any other belief system. This point of view
parallels that of the Afganistan government, which has banned access to the
Internet because the Internet carries information contary to their own
beliefs. In our country, every day, librarians and library staff open the
doors to the library and through their collection and free Internet access,
provide resources on all points of views and all beliefs. The right to
information is a value Americans hold dear and cherish. It is a right that
represents what all librarians stand for and defend. Keeping our libraries
open is more than just a job, it's a symbol of what it means to be an
American.
