Christine, In response to usage of our library by homeschoolers, our children's librarian at the main library started offering an afternoon story time for them. The story time lasts an hour and includes a craft activity that goes along with the story. The children's librarian also offers some instruction in library skills during these sessions. The children served through the homeschoolers' story time are typically 6-9 years old, although occasionally an older or younger sibling will attend as well.
We also have a elementary charter school and a private preschool that go to our branch library each week to browse and study. At the main library, we have usually had a church school that came bi-weekly to study and use the reference services, but I haven't noticed them here much this year. Perhaps it is because we are too busy to allot staff members for the sole purpose of helping them like we did about 2 years ago; to the best of my knowledge, they have not put a library in their church school. I hope this information helps. Deanna Deanna Frazee Director of Library Services 205 E. Please respond to Christine and not the list. Thanks, Amanda at CTLS Staff from the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) are interested in gathering information about the role of libraries in supporting education. NCES has recently established an agreement with the Education Statistics Services Institute (ESSI) to begin gathering information in this area, focusing initially on the role of public libraries in support of home schooling and charter schools. Do you offer any special programs for homeschoolers or charter schools at your public library? If so, would you please send a description to me? Any information you can provide about what public libraries in your area are doing to support home schooling and charter schools would be enormously helpful. Thank you so much.
