Each CTLS library already owns a copy of the Koran but may not even realize
it. How's that, you ask? Here's the mystery solved. The Koran is
available through netLibrary, the electronic book database that you get via
the Texas State Library. To locate the Koran and related titles on
netLibrary, use the Advanced Search Screen. In the subject box type: Islam
Sacred Books OR Koran. Be sure to include both subject headings. You
should get four titles in the results list: 1.  Prolegomena to the Qur'an;
2. Women in the Qur'an, Traditions, and Interpretations; 3. The Holy Qur'an;
and 4. Christ in Islam and Christianity. If you've got a search method
that yields additional titles, please let us know by posting to ctls-l. If
you'd like help using netLibrary or would like more information, please get
in touch with me.
Thanks,
Sharon

Subject: Buying a version of the Koran

Please excuse duplication. I thought this info might be helpful to many of
you.

This morning, one of our librarians asked me about buying a version of the
Koran. If you don't have one, you probably should. There may be people in
your service area who are Moslem, and they probably have their own Koran at
home. Having one at the library, or two (one in circ and one in reference)
is a good idea.

There are many translations. You might want a parallel English & Arabic
version, or just an English one. Bindings vary also, and just as I don't
think a gilt-edged leather bound Bible is the best one for a library,
neither is such a fancy Koran. Save your money & get a hardback for ref & a
paperback for circ.

Order from a reliable vendor. Baker & Taylor and Ingram both stock versions
of the Koran. The Dewey call number is 297.1.

Please call or e-mail me if you have further questions about this or other
collection development issues.
