(Comanche County is just over the line at the northwest corner of CTLS.-L.)

Mrs. Laura Wilson, distinguished Texas photographer and author, will be the
guest of Comanche Public Library, 311 N. Austin St., in Comanche on
Thursday, November 29, between 4:30 and 7:00 p.m. for an exhibit of her
photographs and signing of _Watt Matthews of Lambshead_ and her new book,
_The Hutterites of Montana_.
Mrs. Wilson worked extensively with world famous photographer Richard
Avedon for several years before branching out independently to prepare her
classic biographical study of Watt Matthews, a distinguished and beloved
long-time rancher of Shackleford County. Working with black and white
photos, Mrs. Wilson provides a wonderful view of Matthews, his ranch
operation, and the country that shaped the whole.
Mrs. Wilson's new book, _The Hutterites of Montana_ received the
prestigious Carr P. Collins prize from the Texas Institute of Letters last
spring when Mrs. Wilson was also elected a member of the Institute. The
Hutterites, an unusual nearly invisible religious group that shuns much of
the modern world, live successfully in agricultural communities. They are
slightly similar to the better-known Amish and Mennonite groups but are
different. Only Mrs. Wilson's continuing interest in their culture and her
hard won personal friendships with the people made it possible for her to
complete her project.
Her assignments have included many commissions for Texas Monthly
magazine, the New York Times and other periodicals. The exhibit at the
Comanche Public Library will be a variety of original photographs. Included
are scenes from our area showing cheerleaders, football players, and sports
events from the Mullin and the Comanche schools. Copies of Mrs. Wilson's
books will be for sale.
