Amanda at CTLS The following Children's Award Titles were announced on January 21, 2002 by the American Library Association at the mid-winter meeting in New Orleans: Newbery Medal: A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park. Caldecott Medal: The Three Pigs by David Wiesner. Mildred D. Taylor, author of The Land, and Jerry Pinkney, illustrator of Goin' Someplace Special, won the 2002 Coretta Scott King awards for black authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults. Jerome Lagarrigue won the Corretta Scott King-John Steptoe New Talent Award for illustrations in the book Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles.
