Problems with tile:

Noisy, especially the clang-clang of the cart over the tile joints. DO NOT
USE TERAZZO or marble-like tile to minimize the joints-it is too easy to
slip on this stuff and you'll have lawsuits instead.
Area rug may be tripped over (another lawsuit opportunity)
Can you still use a cart without going over the area rug? If not the weight
of the cart will displace the carpet, not to mention the wheels catching on
the carpet edge.
Area will be cold in the winter (children sit on the floor)

Advantages
Easy to clean up from leaky diapers and vomit
Easy to keep dust down
Could use a white or light tile as it is easy to clean, and brighten up the
area

Consider:
More expensive upfront, but think about carpet squares in this area.

I'm surprised they are looking at tile instead of carpet. I think our tile
installation (we're talking ceramic, right?) was more expensive than the
carpet install was. Unless they are talking about vinyl tile. In that case,
the issues change. No clang of the carts, not quite as cold as ceramic. We
had that in a work room /outside book return area in the old building, and
it held up well to the carts. Just get industrial vinyl with the color going
all the way through, not the cheap stuff. Skip the area rug, though. Same
problems of tripping, carts navigating over it.

There is no doubt that harder floor surfaces will create more noise,
however. Depends on how your library is laid out. If there are no walls or
other partitions between children and a quiet study area, your customers
will complain. It is more expensive to lay the carpet later when all the
stacks have to be moved.

I am getting ready to replace the carpet in the Children's room at the
Library. The City financial staff wants to use tile with an area rug to
save money. I think it would be too noisy. Does anyone have tile instead
of carpet?
