Thanks for working on your ZLOT survey! (I know folks are because I've gotten several
calls and emails asking what is Z39.50, so I've put a brief explanation after
suggesting how you might find out if you've got Z capability.)

Z servers and clients are often added-cost modules, so if you don't remember paying
extra for them you probably don't have either.

If you are an Athena or Winnebago user and you don't know how to answer question 13 on
the ZLOT survey, check your invoice. The Athena zServer and Spectrum Z39.50 Server
both cost $995 with a $150/year support fee. If you bought it but don't know whether
it's running, try your installer or Sagebrush technical support.

For question 20, Spectrum has a built-in Z client, and Athena zMARC costs $395 and
$95/year for support.

(Sorry Follett and other users, I don't have any info to hand.)

A Z server allows your catalog to be searched remotely by a Z client.

Z39.50 is a protocol just like HTTP, the Web protocol. A Z server-Z client is
directly analogous to a Web server-Web browser (which is an HTTP server and an HTTP
client).

The only significant differences between the two protocols from a user's view is that
Z is optimized for precise searching of structured databases -- like a library catalog
-- and Z can search multiple catalogs simultaneously, plus it can return an actual
MARC record which you could use in your local system.
