The 2002 Godfrey Award for Excellence
in Public Library Services for Families and Children

Nominations and Applications:
Due August 1, 2002

The Godfrey Award recognizes outstanding public library programming for
children and families. Richard and Marjorie Waters, principals in PROVIDENCE
Associates Inc, Library Consultants Planners, fund the Award.  The Center
for Consulting and Planning in the Texas Woman's University School of
Library
and Information Studies
administers the award - $2,500 and a sculpture appropriate for public
display.

The purposes of the Godfrey Award are:

- To support and promote the quality of family life through public library
services
- To recognize a public library for outstanding programming for young
children and families
- To share information among librarians about the components of successful
programming
- To encourage public libraries to improve services offered for young
children and families

Nominated public libraries must offer a program which features:
- Design specifically to meet the needs of young children and families
- Ingenuity, imagination, innovation, creativity
- Responsiveness in the number of individuals and/or groups served

Libraries may be nominated or may apply directly.  A nominated library
should:
- Clearly articulate the goals of its program
- Describe in detail the operation of the program
- Provide an assessment of the success of the program
- Submit (8 copies) print or multimedia materials concerning the nominated
program.

Any public library in the United States may be nominated for the Godfrey
Award.

Send nominations and applications in the form of a letter or memorandum
addressed to:

The application or letter of nomination should not exceed 2500 words.
Supporting materials may be appended.  Please send 8 copies of any such
documents. Letters of application or nomination should include the following
information:

- Official name of the nominated library, with address, phone number,
website (if there is one) and name of the Director.

- Name, address, phone number, and email address of nominator

The Godfrey Award Jury will read nomination letters with the following
questions in mind:

- Is there evidence that the nominated program meets a well-documented
community need?

- Are the goals and purposes of the nominated program clearly explained?

- Does the nomination clearly present the details of operation of the
nominated
program?

- Is there evidence that the nominated program was designed specifically to
meet the needs of young children and families?

- Does the nomination letter explain in what ways the nominated program
evidences ingenuity, imagination, innovation, and creativity?

- Does the nominating letter explain and document the success of the
nominated program in meeting the needs of the community or groups served?
