     NCES (National Center for Educational Statistics) has just released 3
products dealing with Public Libraries in
the United States, Fiscal Year 2000. They are:

"E.D. Tab: Public Libraries in the United States, Fiscal Year 2000" This
report provides summary data about public libraries in the 50 states and
the District of Columbia (and in the outlying areas of Guam, the Northern
Mariana Islands, Palau, and the Virgin Islands), for state fiscal year
2000, with highlights and numerous tables. Data are included on
circulation, library visits, reference transactions, interlibrary loans,
children's program attendance, service outlets, public service hours,
Internet access, staff, income, expenditures, and more.

"Public-Use Data File: Public Libraries Survey, Fiscal Year 2000" The
Public Libraries Survey is conducted annually by the National Center for
Education Statistics through the Federal-State Cooperative System for
Public Library Data. The data are collected by a network of state data
coordinators appointed by the chief officers of state library agencies in
the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and the outlying areas. Data are
collected on population of legal service area, service outlets, public
service hours, library materials, total circulation, circulation of
children's materials, reference transactions, library visits, children's
program attendance, electronic services and information, staff, operating
income, operating expenditures, capital outlay, and more.
