Message from Director Martin On June 26, IMLS celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Museum Services Act with a Capitol Hill reception. A special focus of the celebration was the impact of IMLS support on improving the care of museum collections nationwide. In honor of this work, IMLS recently published Sustaining Our Heritage: the IMLS Achievement. The book tells a compelling story about how caring for collections helps connect us with our cultural, scientific, historic and artistic heritage. Representatives of the institutions profiled in the book were invited to attend along with museum leaders, educators, past Institute directors and National Museum Services Board chairs and many others who have worked so hard to bring museum services to the public. The reception provided an opportunity to recognize and thank museum leaders and legislators whose dedication helped create and sustain federal support for the Nation's museums. (See http://www.imls.gov/whatsnew/new_imls.htm#speeches for remarks.) IMLS' origins were remembered in a letter from former Congressman John Brademus, who could not attend the reception. In his letter, the Congressman recalled working with Senator Claiborne Pell on the agency's founding legislation, which won strong bi-partisan support in Congress. That theme of bi-partisanship resonates in the remarks of today's congressional leaders who are working in support of agency funding and reauthorization. Representative Ralph Regula, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, HHS, Education and Related Agencies helped IMLS arrange the event. Congressman Regula spoke about the value of museums to the education of children. He shared stories of his own experiences and excitement about what happens when libraries and museums digitize collections. He also recognized the work of M.J. Albecete, Director of the Canton Art Museum in Canton, Ohio. The museum was one of 20 institutions profiled in Sustaining Our Heritage. Senator Jack Reed, chief sponsor of S. 2611, the Senate bill to reauthorize the Museum and Library Services Act, cataloged the agency's achievements in strengthening museums and libraries in Rhode Island. He applauded the agency noting that cultural institutions make critical contributions to community life. Representative Peter Hoekstra, Chairman of the House Committee on Select Education and co-sponsor of H.R. 3784, the House bill to reauthorize the Museum and Library Services Act, encouraged the library and museum communities to continue to work on reauthorization. Congratulations to all. For copies of Sustaining Our Heritage, email your request to IMLS at: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ********************************************* 2. A Closer Look Tucson 'Working Smart With Art' and IMLS Grant Funds "It's really hard to script that you are going to watch kids blossom before your very eyes, but that is what definitely happened. That's something that no one wrote into the grant proposal." Learn how a 1999 IMLS Museum Leadership Initiative Grant to the Tucson Museum of Art beautified an aging courtyard and in the process, transformed a community. Museums Celebrate America's Freedoms with A Day of Remembrance At its meeting in June the National Museum Services Board adopted a resolution supporting the Celebrate America's Freedoms Day of Remembrance Initiative. This initiative supports museums' desire to stand with their communities as they recognize the anniversary of September 11, 2001. Museums are encouraged to participate in this initiative in the way that best suits their missions and the needs of their communities. To learn more about the initiative, see what other museums are doing and register your museum's participation see http://www.aam-us.org/mcaf/index.htm ********************************************* 5. Librarian Recruitment and Training Initiative Wins Support in Senate Subcommittee The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies recommended funding for the President's proposed $10 million initiative to recruit and train new librarians in a mark up on July 16, 2002. The Senate Appropriations Committee and the full Senate will further review this recommendation. A similar process will take place in the House of Representatives. For more information on the proposed initiative see: http://www.imls.gov/grants/library/lib_bdre.htm ********************************************* 6. The Museum Assessment Program is here to help. Are you concerned about the health and well being of your museum? Does your institution need a check-up? The Museum Assessment Program (MAP) leads your museum through a process of self-study and peer review that provides a comprehensive examination of museum operations. The American Association of Museums offers four types of MAP assessments: Institutional, Collections Management, Public Dimension, and Governance. All types of museums are eligible to receive grants from IMLS that support most of the costs of a MAP assessment. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine commented that, "MAP is a priceless tool for institutions to use to achieve excellence in all of their operations. We owe our success, in large part, to this program and we cannot praise it enough." Grants are non-competitive, and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are easy to complete, and the benefits of MAP are wide-ranging. The MAP grant deadline is December 1, 2002. For an application or more information, please visit the AAM's Web site at http://www.aam-us.org/map.htm or contact the AAM's MAP office at (202) 289-9118 or e-mail at mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ********************************************* 8.
