Judy, Your reasons for not carrying videos are very good reasons, particularly when you borrowers aren't expressing a desire for them. We all should have priorities for collection development that are driven by our communities, and it certainly sounds as if you have done just that. Please know that in my earlier message that I wasn't criticizing your choice. Rather, I was just wondering why so many of us--myself included--tend to look at videos differently than books. As to your question about how long a popular video lasts, my answer is that you simply can't tell. Some of our videos are over 5 years old, circulate frequently and show no signs of wearing out. In spite of the fact that we generally don't by popular movies as soon as they have been released, we did get the Harry Potter movie on video and DVD because of a huge volume of requests. So far, they are staying constantly in circulation and have not become damaged or become extremely overdue. In general, our videos last very well even if they have a high circulation rate. The number reason a video disappears from our shelves is non-return. DVDs have proven to be much more likely to be damaged, although most damage is very minor and can be polished out. We had to decide to put 50 dollars into 1 video or 5 books (example, I realize videos aren't all 50 and books aren't 10) but we had to decide where to set our priorities and especially our limited space and in our community there is no other place to get books but there is a place to get videos. We do have a lot of audios because our patrons ask for them but we get very few requests for videos hence our decision. I wonder how long a popular video, say Harry Potter lasts on the shelves, don't they get broken quickly? Parents frequently cannot afford to satisfy their children's appetites for videos in the quantity or repetition they desire. Many people come in for the video and get books and other services just because they are already there. We get cases from Demco, I think, and use them again once the already used videos die. I got many on E-bay and lately at a Blockbuster clearance sale. Casing was done by volunteers. We have ordered more spinners for the growing number and check them for 1 week.
