I am sorry to report that David Wisniewski, 1997 Caldecott-winning illustrator of "Golem" passed away on September 10, according the Clarion Books' Publicity Department. Clarion had no details to share on the cause of death. David was the illustrator for the Texas Reading Club several years ago (Familiar Faces Faraway Places) and credited Texas for helping him hone his artistic skills enough to win the Caldecott the next year (I'm not sure I believe that but it was nice to hear him say it). He was a delightful and very funny person and I enjoyed working with him while I was at the State Library. I also remember his Caldecott acceptance speech about having been a clown. He will be missed!
