In the spirit of celebration of February as Black History Month, join the Carver Branch Wired for Youth Center as they host the Fourteenth National African American Read-In Chain endorsed by the International Reading Association, and sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. This endorsement asks libraries, schools, churches, bookstores, community and professional organizations, and interested citizens to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month by hosting Read-Ins in their communities. The Carver Branch of the Austin Public Library, 1607 Pennsylvania Ave. is sponsoring a Read-In inviting local African American writers, community leaders, and the young people of the community to read at an event on Sunday, February 2, 2003 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Local authors include; young adult author, Lori Aurelia Williams; Austin poet Ivan Miller (also known as "Ivanho"), among others. "This event is an excellent opportunity to let the community know that the Carver Branch is still open for business," says Michele Gorman WFY Librarian. The permanent Carver Branch facility closed in October 2002 for renovation and expansion and opened in two temporary portable buildings located on the Kealing Middle School Campus.
