ALL WRITE! ASPCA 2003 CHILDREN'S ESSAY CONTEST UNDERWAY Companion animals are members of the family--just like a brother, sister or grandparent. The ASPCA recently asked children across the country to explore this theme in an essay of up to 400 words. "We felt this would be a topic that kids would want to write about. Children respond so well to learning about their world through animals, but we sometimes overlook the animals who can have the biggest influence on our kids--the animals in our homes," says the ASPCA's Bill Samuels, Ph.D., Director of Humane Education. "Pets are sometimes the most stable part of a family, and can show how love can last through anything." All submissions must be postmarked by December 15, and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in grades 3-5 and 6-8. The Humane Education department welcomes submissions from all young friends of animals, so if you know of any budding essayists, call (212) 876-7700, x4400 for a complete set of rules. And teachers, please take note--to request a classroom packet for the contest, e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] or write to ASPCA Essay Contest, Humane Education Department, 424 East 92nd St., New York, NY 10128-6804.
