Here’s an opportunity to raise money for your library through online shopping. All you have to do is register and get your library supporters to shop online. There’s no cost to your library, and your library receives a percentage of sales. Shop for the Library is teaming up with Schoolpop to operate the program. Schoolpop is a reputable outfit. My son’s school has raised quite a substantial amount through Schoolpop.  Details follow.

Shop for the Library was launched at the Woodland (CA) Public Library in April as a means of raising funds through online purchases made by library supporters.  Participating merchants -- including ebay, expedia, and BarnesandNoble.com -- give the library a percentage of all sales referred from the Shop website (www.shopforthelibrary.net ).

In order to help other public libraries set up such a program, Shop for the Library is exploring a partnership with Schoolpop (www.schoolpop.com ), a similar venture which currently serves America’s K-12 schools.   The program would still be known as Shop for the Library, but behind-the-scenes operations would be run by Schoolpop.  There will be no charge for libraries to participate, as Schoolpop is compensated though a small percentage on each commission earned.

In addition to online shopping, an expanded Shop for the Library will offer libraries the means to raise funds through:

Catalog and in-store shopping --  Supporters can register their credit and ATM/debit cards on Shop for the Library’s secure website.  Then every purchase made from a participating store or catalog generates a commission for the library.

Shop for the Library Visa Card -- Every use of the card will generate a commission for the library.

Magazine Mall -- Supporters can subscribe to more than 750 magazine titles, generating commissions up to 40% for your library

Learn and Earn -- Library supporters can purchase top-quality educational and family media products below retail price, with the library earning 25 percent of the retail price on each purchase.

Schoolpop has asked us to help them assess the number of libraries who might sign up to raise funds through an expanded and enhanced Shop for the Library program, which we anticipate will be available by January.   Please indicate your potential interest by November 21 via this online form:

We will get in touch with more information once Shop for the Library is ready for expansion.    Once again, there will be no charge for a library to raise funds through Shop for the Library.

Libraries who do not want to wait for the expanded launch of Shop for the Library can sign up today for any of the Schoolpop-branded fundraising programs mentioned above through schoolpop.com.
