State Library Director and El Paso librarians are among the presenters at
the upcoming Community Technology Conference in Austin starting Sunday
(grant tips and workshops; main programs Monday and Tuesday).

Agenda includes public access strategies, legal and liability protections
for local public access providers, funding sources like Gates Foundation
(Blair Fitzsimons, former TIF chair presenting that info), first 2004 TOP
grant information, and other program sessions designed specifically to
help libraries continue "Life after TIF" services.

Sunday, after the grant writing workshop and TOP presentation, we're
having a "How to host a webraising" presentation led by Sue Soy of APL.
This is a nice, free program to boost community service and involvement by
creating webpages for your local nonprofits. (We'll host them for free at
MAIN.) You don't have to register for the conference to attend Sunday
sessions.

more details: www.tcrc.net/conference2003. Don't let registration fee be a
barrier. If your budget does not allow the normal $100, mark "Library" in
as a comment; that makes it $50. And if your budget does not allow $50,
mark "Library - Gene" in as a comment and come for free. We've gotta do
everything we can to support each other in these difficult economic times.

separate point. One thing we're doing is partnering public access with
the local Texas Workforce Center and it seems to be working out really
well. Users there are not the same folks likely to be access users at a
library; more emphasis on job locating, GED and other educational
programs, etc. May be worth considering for your community if you have a
workforce ("One Stop") center. They have staff, facility and other assets
to ease pressure on a public library's slim operating budget; we provide
technology access.
