On the dirty books, I have called this to the patron's attention and told
them that if it happens again that their lending privileges will be
curtailed to only one book at a time or suspended altogether.

We have no policy about briefcases and such. This has not been a problem for
us, but you might ask them to leave their things at the desk or someplace
away from where they are sitting so they won't have access to slipping
something into their belongings.

I have a couple of recurring problems. One patron always returns the books
filthy. They have food on them, dirt, roach droppings, etc. How do you
handle this?

There is another patron we suspect is taking the new magazines by slipping
them in his brief case. does anyone have a policy about prohibiting
briefcases or backpacks or a policy to search these items before the patron
leaves?

Thanks for your help.
