Our patrons are required to pay for the replacement cost as well as a flat processing fee of $7.00 when an item is lost.

When the patron returns the lost and paid for article we do not refund the processing fee.

However, on the rare occasions that it resurfaces and we are reasonably sure that it has been in the library all along, we then make an exception and refund both the COB and PROC FEE. This is a rare occurrence, as a patron rarely pays for an item that they know they have returned.

I've come upon a situation.  When a patron loses a book, we usually require them to pay for a replacement.  Recently, we've had two items that were "lost and paid for" resurface.  I'm wondering how other libraries handle this.   Do you refund the fine?  Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks!

HeritageQuest pledges have hit the 50% mark!

If you have submitted a pledge, Thank You! If you haven't you still have until May 1st to participate. Every pledge counts. I've had librarians ask me "do you think we'll make our goal?". I always say yes because I believe in the librarians of Texas. Last year's successful pledge drive was proof of what could be accomplished by libraries working together to achieve a goal. If you have any questions about the HQ pledge drive email me or give me a call.

Keep up with the pledge drive at:
