At Round Rock, we have a database of obits from the Round Rock Leader since
1975. We get the microfilm of the Leader every six months, and we have a
volunteer go through and record obits, including name, birth and death, and
date of publication.

This was originally put into a Word document as a simple table, but I've
recently put it Access and we will put it online eventually. I believe that
the city uses ColdFusion, which will be used to serve the data from the
Access database, but I haven't gotten many details on how we'll do all that
yet.

We also have a vertical file with clippings, including obits, and I'm
working on getting that indexed and the information added to our database.
Volunteers are wonderful!

Danielle

Subject: Obituary Index

Is anyone doing this? Please reply to Karen or to the list, so that we can
all see who's doing what. I know at least one library out there has
obituaries in a card file.

...building an obituary database, basically indexing citations in the
local newspaper that the Library has on microfilm.
Have any other CTLS members undertaken such a project? I'd sure like to
know what software they used and how they built their index. If I do such a
thing, I'd want to offer it online.

Thanks!
