 Gathering at the Waters: Embracing our Spirits, Telling Our Stories

 



The Joint Conference of Librarians of Color, "Gathering at the Waters: Embracing our Spirits, Telling Our Stories," first-ever conference being held on October 12-15, 2006, in Dallas, Texas, at the Adams Mark Hotel.

 

The 2006 joint national conference is co-sponsored by the American Indian Library Association (AILA); the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA); the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA); the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), and REFORMA, the National Association to Provide Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking, affiliate members of the American Library Association (ALA).

 

The conference consists of 100 sessions in seven thematic tracks with presentations by 150 professionals from all types of libraries, governmental agencies, and advocate organizations.

Topics covered in the sessions include:

--Library recruitment, retention, mentoring, and general staff development
--Library resources accessible through ALA, state and federal agencies, and via the Internet
--Legal issues, such as book challenges, immigration and legislative strategies
--ESOL (English as a Second Language), basic and information literacy
--Diversity strategies in programming, ethnic and gender studies, collection development, and multicultural programs and services

There are two preconferences scheduled for Wednesday, October 11, 2006, "Good Health/Buena Salud/Sen ti Glen," and "Promises to Keep: Only The Best for Children & Youth."
