Before I was affiliated with the library, but was just a patron, the limit
here was two per patron. I remember bringing my kids in and they could only
get two books at a time. At one point, too, a patron could only check out
one "new book" at a time.

At some point before I came here the limits were removed and patrons could
check out an unlimited number. But we've been having trouble getting our
books back when people have checked out umpteen books. After they are a few
days late, the fines really rack up and people are reluctant to bring them
back and pay up, so they just wouldn't bring them back.

So, a few months ago, I started the policy of limiting check-outs to five
per adult and 10 Junior/ Easies per child. This has worked well for us and
people seem very satisfied with this. Only a few patrons checked out more
than that many anyway.

Inquiring minds want to know:

Does your library limit the number of materials that a patron can check out
at one time?

Do you limit by topic? (Example, only 2 books on snakes when you suspect the
entire 5th grade is doing reptile reports)

Do you limit by format (3 videos or DVDs)?

Please reply to the list so that we can share answers. It's difficult to do
comparisons of library circulation or turnover rate with differing policies.

Thank you.
