Taylor Public Library has a movie license from Movie Licensing USA
(http://www.movlic.com/PDFWeb/gatewayL.html) and has been using it for
the last couple of years. You can show any movie from anywhere (library
collection, personal collection, video store, etc.) as long as it is
from one of the major studies covered by the license. We have monthly
"family" movies throughout the school year. During the summer reading
program, from June-July, we show weekly Monday Night Movies, advertised
for families. We purposefully stay away from movies rated R and some
PG-13. When we advertise the movie, we prominently advertise the rating
so that it's no surprise. Our audience sizes vary greatly, but newly
released DVD's have a bigger draw.  Tap dancing penguins=audience of 52;
magical nannies=audience of 14.

Movies are a not staff intensive program so it is very cost efficient
for the Library to show movies. Since we advertise it as a family
event, we usually have a parent or older sibling watching a group of
younger ones. So far, parents have been good about taking out fussy
kids. Part of TPL's mission is to provide educational, informational
and recreational resources, and showing movies is one more way to do
that.

Can any library tell me their pros and cons of showing movies? What
criteria they have for participants? unattended children? parents
required to be present? Show movies throughout the year or only during
Summer? How many times? What am I getting myself into with showing
movies?
