Everyone,

I'm on the lookout for Stimulus funding connections and information for
the Austin Public Library right now and will pass anything on that might
be helpful to all of our libraries.

One item for right now: Employment for Seniors

Some stimulus funding is flowing from federal levels in to agencies
around Austin right now. Generally, this money is flowing to groups
where an already proven relationship has been established between
agencies. Workforce Solutions - Capital Area has been allocated
$4,348,568 in WIA (Workforce Investment Act) funds under ARRA 2009.
Needless to say they are gearing up to employ and get this money into
the economy doing what they do best - placing seniors in jobs that may
lead to full-time employment.

Mike Rivera at Austin AARP (391-9299) is now able to place qualified
seniors in his program in libraries and other non-profits paying these
seniors who are actively looking for work $6.50/hr. They are limited to
an 18 hour/week. They often have degrees -- GEDs all the way up to
doctorates. For a bit of time, Mike had a placement freeze, but he is
placing seniors again. Mike has people placed in Kyle and Elgin
libraries right now as library aides and I'd love to know how this is
working out.

The first step for the host agency is to have a work need and then to
set up an appointment to learn more about the program and enter into an
agreement understanding the terms and conditions for the Library and the
employer. Host libraries interview the candidates and have the
opportunity to select or not select and if you have a position that
comes open, at least consider the senior as a candidate if they qualify
to apply for it.

Best, Sue

So, it looks like, in most cases, the "where to apply", as in a name of
a bureau, contact, etc. is still lacking?

Subject: [ctls-l] Stimulus information

At the Texas Library Association conference in Houston last week, a
session was held on legislative issues.

A handout has been created and is on the TLA website. Please look at it
and get with your city, county, board, and other local officials to see
where you could apply for money for your library or your community.

Good luck!
