Library Friends Offer New "Perks" for Membership

According to current President Sheryl Baker, the Friends of the Dripping
Springs Community Library will hold a new membership drive May 14-20 at
the library, located at 501 Sportsplex Drive. Baker said representatives
will be on hand at the following times to encourage involvement in
Friends' activities and to explain the new "perks" being offered for
various levels of membership:

*       Thursday, May 14, from 3-6 p.m.

*       Friday, May 15, from 9 a.m. until noon

*       Monday, May 18, from 3-5 p.m.

*       Tuesday, May 19, from 10 a.m. until noon

*       Wednesday, May 20, from 3 to 6 p.m.

"Friends membership dollars benefit the entire community through the
books, programs and services they help to provide. Now, in addition to
the satisfaction of aiding a worthy cause," Baker said, new members will
receive the following:

* Caldecott (contributing $20): 1 overdue book fine forgiveness
coupon, 1 coupon for 2 free paperbacks and 1 coupon good for half off on
any one purchase made from the used books shelves at the library

* Newberry ($30): a newly designed Friends of the Library coffee
mug

* Nobel ($50): a limited edition designer book bag created by
library staffer Tatjana Versaggi with fabric donated by Le Ragge Rugs

* Lone Star ($75): a book plaque in your name will be placed in
one of the new book titles

purchased by the library

* Pulitzer ($100): a commemorative Christmas tree ornament
designed by local glass artist Deniece Waite

* Carnegie ($200): two tickets to the next "Christmas in the
Hills" Tour of Homes

Baker explained that the new premiums are cumulative in nature. "Join at
any level and receive all the premiums for that level and for the ones
preceding it," she said.. For those unable to stop by during the
membership drive itself, she noted that membership forms are always
available at the library, or online at dscl.org.

At this year's annual meeting of the Friends, Baker presented a check
worth $6,715 to Librarian Cara Russell, to help with expansion of the
library's role as a cultural arts center in the community. Those funds
were raised via membership dues and the annual "Christmas in the Hills"
Tour of Homes.

According to Russell, the money will be used primarily for special
programs and marketing

needs. She is allocating $2,000 to be spent on volunteer appreciation
gifts, a new "Summer Fun" program to be held on Wednesday afternoons,
and to cover costs of promotion, printing and prizes for the summer
reading incentive program.

Another $2,000 is set aside for marketing needs, to help advertise
programs being held at the library, and $1,700 will help with travel
costs and enrollment in professional education workshops, she said. The
Friends funds will pay for 4 staffers' membership dues in the Texas
Library Association, and $250 is being used to provide shirts for staff
members.

Work on the 2009 Tour of Homes is already under way. Now's a good time
to find out how to help the Friends make it one of the best.
