I went through a list of "50 Most Popular Genealogy Websites for 2008"
that was distributed at the Texas Library Association conference in
Houston last month and created a list of those which were most useful
and usable. You may want to create a handout for patrons with these
sites listed to help them in their research.

sections; some are quite useful.

building & networking

 

www.familysearch.org <http://www.familysearch.org/> : Try the "Record
Search Pilot" section under the "Search Records" button at the top. It's
new and helpful.

 

www.myfamily.com <http://www.myfamily.com/>  hosts family websites. Free
& pay ($) sections.

 

www.findagrave.com <http://www.findagrave.com/>  is a nationwide
cemetery database. Famous and not-so famous people are listed.

 

www.ellisisland.org <http://www.ellisisland.org/>  is a great site IF
you have an ancestor who came through New York from 1892-1924, when E.
I. was used as an immigrant center.

 

www.Cyndislist.com <http://www.cyndislist.com/>  is one of the
best-known and most helpful sites. It organizes sites by subjects.

 

www.searchforancestors.com <http://www.searchforancestors.com/>  is an
interactive directory of free genealogy websites & data.

 

www.tribalpages.com <http://www.tribalpages.com/>  Family tree hosting
and charting program. 

 

www.familytreedna.com <http://www.familytreedna.com/>  Company that
sells DNA testing kits to help establish ancestry.

 

www.JewishGen.org <http://www.jewishgen.org/>  Good site for Jewish
researchers.

 

www.gencircles.com <http://www.gencircles.com/>  has lots of family
trees. It even cross-references names to other trees.

 

www.daddezio.com <http://www.daddezio.com/>  focuses on Italian
research, with instructions & information.

 

www.PoliticalGraveyard.com <http://www.politicalgraveyard.com/>  shows
where the bodies are buried, literally! ;-)

 

www.linkpendium.com <http://www.linkpendium.com/>  is a collection of
categorized sites by region & surname.

 

www.US-census.org <http://www.us-census.org/>  has census abstracts
(from the US GenWeb project).

 

www.CensusFinder.com <http://www.censusfinder.com/>  has links to free
census records.

 

www.census-online.com <http://www.census-online.com/>  links to censuses
& census abstracts.

 

www.genwed.com <http://www.genwed.com/>  links to marriage records.

 

http://usgenweb.org <http://usgenweb.org/>  is the national site of the
