Subject: RE: [ctls-l] Computers for small children?

We will purchase 2 Early Literacy Stations, one English, one Spanish
language, by AWE with grant funds this year. They come fully loaded
with learning games and stand-alone from our network. They are for
children about age 2 to 4th grade.

They are great. My eight-year-old grandson was in the library when
Brian Aerker, the salesman, showed them to us so we actually could see
what a kid would do on them. We plan to have 8 in the future - 2 in the
adult computer area to keep the children occupied while their parents
are busy taking care of their business on the computer and 6 on a carrel
in the children's area.

We have a library
that is considering computers for children (younger than 6th grade), but
doesn't feel comfortable having children unsupervised on real computers.

There was an
excellent article touching on this last Sunday in the Austin American
Statesman:

http://www.statesman.com/life/content/life/stories/other/2009/08/23/0823
gadget.html

But the computer it
suggests for young users, PeeWee PC Pivot Tablet Laptop, is $500.
Little
Tikes products have also been suggested.

I'm new at this --
could you folks share with the list computer ideas that have worked well
in
children's areas?
