we have 3 wireless systems in place to cover both of the buildings. they
operate outside of the building. they need no passwords. they are on at all
times--service willing. they are not inside of our system so no security
issues. patrons love it. we had signs up a long time ago to help them connect
but now days it works automatically for almost everyone

Wi-fi is available on both floors of the library as well as in most of
the park that surrounds our building and has been for several years.
People access it after hours all the time and we have had no problems
that I am aware of. There are no passwords. I'm not the tech person
but I know our wi-fi is on its own server and is completely separate
from the library server. We let people know wi-fi is available and it
is up to them to know how to access it.

Patrons who use our pc's to access the internet fill out a user
agreement form, wi-fi users do not.

I'm forwarding this for Jan Steele at Lago vista. I have my
opinions, but I would like to hear from you folks out there -- what has
your experience been, good and bad, with wireless?

        Laurie,

We are getting ready to offer wireless Internet service to our
laptop users. I have some concerns about security and would like to
know how other libraries handle it.

        1. Do you provide passwords?

        2. If so, do you limit wi-fi availability to the same hours
that the library is open?

        3. Are you concerned about users sitting outside the
library after closing hours to use the wi-fi? (In other words, are
there any problems with vandalism?)

        4. What is the best way to prevent a user from penetrating
the library's firewall?

Thank you in advance for your answers!
