Ours are security protected. We are on Time Warner and someone spammed the system from outside the building once, and we almost lost our TW free account for the public because of this.

People access it after hours all the time and we have had no problems that I am aware of. There are no passwords. I'm not the tech person but I know our wi-fi is on its own server and is completely separate from the library server. We let people know wi-fi is available and it is up to them to know how to access it. Patrons who use our pc's to access the internet fill out a user agreement form, wi-fi users do not. ----- Original Message ----- From: Holly Gordon <mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, October 23, 2009 4:42 PM Subject: [ctls-l] Wi-fi and libraries I'm forwarding this for Jan Steele at Lago vista. I have my opinions, but I would like to hear from you folks out there -- what has your experience been, good and bad, with wireless? From: Jan Steele [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, October 21, 2009 1:41 PM To: 'Laurie Mahaffey' Subject: Wi-fi and libraries Laurie, We are getting ready to offer wireless Internet service to our laptop users. I have some concerns about security and would like to know how other libraries handle it. 1. Do you provide passwords? 2. If so, do you limit wi-fi availability to the same hours that the library is open? 3. Are you concerned about users sitting outside the library after closing hours to use the wi-fi? (In other words, are there any problems with vandalism?) 4. What is the best way to prevent a user from penetrating the library's firewall? Thank you in advance for your answers!
