Our wireless is provided through Time-Warner Cable and is not directly linked
to our city/library server, so we have no risk of firewall invasion. It does
not use password access, so users do so at their own risk. We do often have
folks parked by the library using their laptops, but that has not presented any
additional risk to the library so far. We do have the advantage of being part
of the neighborhood, so the neighbors do watch and are not afraid to call the
police if they see anything suspicious.

Subject: [ctls-l] Wi-fi and libraries

I'm forwarding this for Jan Steele at Lago vista.  I have my opinions, but I
would like to hear from you folks out there -- what has your experience been,
good and bad, with wireless?

Subject: Wi-fi and libraries

Laurie,

We are getting ready to offer wireless Internet service to our laptop users.  I
have some concerns about security and would like to know how other libraries
handle it.
1.      Do you provide passwords?
2.      If so, do you limit wi-fi availability to the same hours that the
library is open?
3.      Are you concerned about users sitting outside the library after closing
hours to use the wi-fi?  (In other words, are there any problems with
vandalism?)
4.      What is the best way to prevent a user from penetrating the library’s
firewall?

Thank you in advance for your answers!
