We provide free unlimited Wi-fi at the library. We provide laptops that
can be checked out and used in the library on all three levels of the
building. Anyone may bring in their own laptop and use our connection.
You can reach our signal from outside of our building. People often sit
in the parking lot after hours and utilize our signal. It is on its own
network and has never been an issue for us. Once our ISP, TSTC, noted a
virus on the system and called to inform us, but it went away quickly.
We did a detailed search/scan on all of our machines and everything came
up clear. We believe it was on a machine someone was using that did not
belong to the library. It was not really an issue because when they
signed off the concern was gone. Not much you can do about it if you
offer Wi-fi. We do have a time management system on all our computers
including the laptops, but if they bring their own machine there are no
limits.

I'm forwarding this for Jan Steele at Lago vista. I have my opinions,
but I would like to hear from you folks out there -- what has your
experience been, good and bad, with wireless?

Subject: Wi-fi and libraries

Laurie,

We are getting ready to offer wireless Internet service to our laptop
users. I have some concerns about security and would like to know how
other libraries handle it.

1. Do you provide passwords?

2. If so, do you limit wi-fi availability to the same hours that
the library is open?

3. Are you concerned about users sitting outside the library after
closing hours to use the wi-fi? (In other words, are there any problems
with vandalism?)

4. What is the best way to prevent a user from penetrating the
library's firewall?

Thank you in advance for your answers!
