MAKING THE BEST OF A SHRINKING BUDGET: CREATIVE PRACTICES IN THE NEW ECONOMY BROADCAST DATE AND TIME: Friday, January 29, 2010, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Central Time PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: "Costs rise while buying power, and even budgets, shrink. Meanwhile, new formats appear that cost more than we had budgeted. We are accustomed to modest growth or possibly budget status quo, but now many face steep cuts. Libraries have reduced hours, cut subscriptions, stepped up their resource sharing efforts, engaged in consortial buys, adopted outsourcing of certain functions, used staff in creative ways, sought best deals with vendors, boosted fundraising efforts, mounted advocacy campaigns, sought open source solutions, used focus groups to determine most needed services, merged with other libraries. Join Leslie Burger, Director of the Princeton (NJ) Public Library and founder of Library Development Solutions, and others for a discussion of best ways to deal with the difficult economy in which we find ourselves. Which principles should we apply to specific cost-savings measures we choose in our own libraries? How can we sustain our core services?" -- The College of DuPage VIEWING AND REGISTRATION INFORMATION: This program may be viewed with a group via teleconference or Webcast at various host sites around the state.
