Hi all,

Some of you are probably already aware of this website (I found it a couple
of years ago), but just in case you're not, I thought I'd share it with
everyone. It's a good website for ideas for Library Lovers' Month.

http://www.librarysupport.net/librarylovers/

One thing that we'll be doing this year is issuing a proclamation using the
sample from this website. However, we changed the wording a little on the
last "WHEREAS" to read: "WHEREAS, more than 11.7 million people in the State
of Texas including 6,700 registered borrowers at the City of Lampasas Public
Library have library cards". FYI, I got the 11.7 million figure from Anne
Ramos at TSL; the actual number is 11,777,305 (from FY 2008); according to
Anne, this is the most recent figure available.

Thanks, Anne!

Shanda, sounds like a great idea! Perhaps you'd like to share it with others
on CTLS-L.

Happy weekend, everyone.

Shanda,

Your best estimate is good. I did check for TexShare borrower card
statistics, but there were none reported.

Maybe the following wording is closer to what would work for you:

"WHEREAS, more than 11.5 million people in the State of Texas including
[over] 5,000 registered borrowers at the City of Lampasas Public Library
have library cards..." ( adapted from Sample Proclamation:
<http://www.librarysupport.net/librarylovers/proclamation.html>
http://www.librarysupport.net/librarylovers/proclamation.html )

>From the Annual Report Instructions:

7.11 REGISTERED BORROWERS. A registered borrower is a library user who has
applied for and received an identification number or card from the public
library that has established conditions under which the user may borrow
library materials and gain access to other library resources. (Output
Measures for Public Libraries, 2nd edition). Note: Files should have been
purged within the past three (3) years.

Thanks, Anne! I am trying to prepare a proclamation for February (Library
Lovers' Month), but the wording is a little different. It reads, "WHEREAS,
16.5 million people in the State of California and (fill-in number)
residents in the County (or City) of (fill-in name) have library cards", and
the only info we have is how many of Lampasas residents have cards at our
library...not how many have library cards total. They could have a card for
another area library, but not ours. So I was trying to figure out how to
change the wording so it would be accurate. Thanks again for your help!

Shanda,

We have calculated the Texas statewide total as follows: Number of
Registered Borrowers in FY 2008 is 11,777,305

This is In response to your inquiry regarding the number of Texas residents
with library borrowers cards. The Texas State Library, Library Development
Division collects this data annually, and the most recent data is included
in Texas Public Library Statistics for 2008.

You may access a downloadable file online at
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/pubs/pls/2008/download.html and data for each
library is reported under the "Number of Registered Borrowers" Q461 (column
7.9). You may download, sort, and share library data using this file.

For a quick view of individual library statistics you may prefer to link to
the Public Library Statistics for 2008 at
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/pubs/pls/2008/index.html and view the data for
each library in html format on a single page.

The annual report data for Lampasas Public Library indicates

Number of registered borrowers

5,874

The homepage for Texas Public Library Statistics is
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/pubs/pls/index.html

and this page includes various statewide totals, including 2008 statewide
analysis of selected data at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/pubs/tpls08/

The calculation of a statewide total number of borrowers does not appear
online, so please feel free to contact me or Stacey Malek, Program
Coordinator if you need calculations of library data. Stacey is copied on
this note. Please let me know if this does not answer your question.

Hi Laurie,

Do you know if there is a relatively recent statistic somewhere about how
many Texas residents have library cards? I've kind of looked around, and I
haven't come upon it yet. I thought I'd ask someone else before I spent too
much more time searching.

Thanks,

Shanda
