There are four separate grant opportunities available. The deadline for applications is February 26, 2010, with awards to be announced in August 2010. The grant period will run September 1, 2010 - August 31, 2011. * Cooperation Grants * Special Projects Grants * Texas Reads Grants * TexTreasures Grants Full details and guidelines are available at: http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/funding/lsta/ and http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/funding/index.html#txReads and http://www.texshare.edu/programs/textreasures/ COOPERATION GRANTS This grant program provides funds to public and academic libraries for programs that promote cooperative services for learning and access to information. Programs involving collaboration are encouraged. Programs must emphasize improved services by the library to its customers. Programs may be in the following categories: 1) Expand services for learning and access to information & educational resources in a variety of formats; 2) Develop library services that provide all users access to information through local, state, regional, national & international electronic networks; 3) Provide electronic and other linkages between and among all types of libraries; or 4) Develop public & private partnerships with other agencies and community-based organizations. Approximately $300,000 is available for Library Cooperation Grants, subject to approval by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. While the request may be part of a larger program, awards will not exceed $75,000. SPECIAL PROJECTS GRANTS This grant program provides funds for programs that expand library services to all members of the library's community. It enables libraries to develop programs for populations with special needs. Programs involving collaboration are encouraged. Programs must emphasize improved services by the library to its customers. Programs may be in one of the following categories: 1) Target library services to individuals of diverse geographic, cultural, or socioeconomic backgrounds, to individuals with disabilities, and to individuals with limited functional literacy or information skills; or 2) Target library and information services to persons having difficulty using a library and to underserved urban and rural communities, including children from families below the poverty line. Approximately $300,000 is available for Library Systems Grants, subject to approval by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. While the request may be part of a larger program, awards will not exceed $75,000. TEXAS READS GRANTS This grant program funds public library programs to promote reading and literacy within local communities. Programs may be targeted to the entire community or to a segment of the community. Programs involving collaboration with other community organizations are encouraged. Reading promotion programs are those that actively encourage people to read and to develop a lifelong love of reading. One goal of reading promotion programs is to develop a more literate community. Typically, this involves presenting or hosting programs that will involve people in reading activities and will generate enthusiasm for reading. Libraries may also coordinate programs in basic literacy, family literacy, and the ability to read, write and speak English and to compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society. An estimated total of up to $10,000 is available, subject to approval by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The maximum award for FY2011 is $3,000. TEXTREASURES GRANTS The TexTreasures grant program provides assistance and encouragement to libraries to provide access to their special or unique holdings, and to make information about these holdings available to all Texans. Applicants may propose projects designed to increase accessibility through a wide range of activities such as cataloging, indexing, or digitizing local materials with statewide significance. An estimated total of up to $150,000 is available for TexTreasures Grants, subject to approval by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The maximum award for FY 2011 is $20,000 for a single institution and $25,000 for collaborative grant projects.
