-Caveat Lector- Missing Chemicals Found in Bin, Ending an FBI Investigation AP 23-DEC-98 MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Twenty-five tons of ammonium nitrate that disappeared from a farm supply store in July has reappeared in the same bin from which it vanished, ending an FBI investigation that initially focused on a possible terrorist threat. The stolen chemical was returned last month to Bruceton Farm Services in Bruceton Mills, FBI spokesman Bill Crowley said Tuesday. The ammonium nitrate was believed stolen for use as fertilizer for a local farmers' field. But the FBI initially considered more ominous possibilities, such as that it was being used to make terrorists' bombs, and at one point offered $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the theft. "We did not find any link to terrorism, and we have closed our investigation," Crowley said. Ammonium nitrate was a key ingredient in the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. The explosion killed 168 people and injured hundreds of others. Copyright 1998& The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
