Because no matter how successful it's most successful citizens are, they
are not the LEADER of that nation...
And would would hope that the person elected to that office reflected the
highest of moral and ethical behavior....
The fact that we don't, and even more tellingly, that as a nation we seem
blase' to this sort of behavior, is damning to the nation as a whole...

I don't particularly care about their sex lives and divorces, unless it
enters into the realm of general ethics...and yes, ethics, both private
and corporate, ARE important...

Perhaps due to the unethical shenanigans of our leaders being given just
a wink and a nod, a little elbowing to the ribs with a low chuckle...hey,
if THEY can get away with it, why not the rank-and-file citizen?
I was just telling someone an incident that very much describes what you
mention about young people's attitudes -- the past couple of years, I've
gotten into kite flying...I'm still in the 'minor leagues', but where I
fly on weekends, there are a couple of guys with really huge kites the
size of small buses (the kites are based on parachute designs)...when we
all have our kites staked out, especially when the huge ones are flying,
it's quite a show, free entertainment for the people at the park, who for
the most part express amazement and awe...
But I'm always surprised at the ones whose first question asked is "How
much do those things cost?" (it's a variation on the theme that if you
have to ask, you can't afford them...but in this case if they're asking,
they may indeed be able to afford them, but would never buy one...)
And the saddest case was one day when a group of young black men stopped
by, totally amazed at what they saw...and then asked "Can you make any
serious money flying those things?"...
At first I laughed, telling them that I'd like to figure out how, so that
I could quit my day job and fly all the time...but when it dawned on them
that none of us were making money with these things, that in fact it COST
us money, I could tell that they were totally lost...they just couldn't
grasp the concept of doing something for the JOY of doing it, without any
monetary reward to it...

Unless you're white, in the upper stratas economically, are
well-connected politically, and steal megabucks...then you just get a
slap on the wrist and go to a 'Club Med' prison for a couple of years...
