Maybe you should think about the life teachers lived when they unionized.
Mostly they were paid tiny salaries, and sent to live with members of the
community. Read the Wilder books if you want to know what that could be like.
Read the Wilder books if you want to know about juvenile delinquents in the
old days. I'm talking about the real little house books here, not that
slobbery stuff you saw on television. Yes, they are children's books, but
I've never known an adult who read them who didn't learn a lot more about
American history, the real history not the recounts of rich and famous
individuals. Long after those days, teachers were still poorly paid, but at
least they had some community respect. It was a fact, however, that male
teachers were paid much more than female teachers, and that a woman who
married had to quit teaching immediately. It wasn't that old maids taught
school, it was that if you wanted to teach school, you had to become an old
maid. Further, no school can teach everything. It's time those who want
their children to have certain ideas and values to present those ideas and
values at home, and if they want to be sure the kids are learning those ideas
and values, it helps if the parents talk about the ideas and live up to those
values. Slamming teachers' unions is not the answer to the problems we have
with American youth. Prudy
