Dear Bill:
To find out more about the Frankists, read Michael Mandel [or Arthur
Mandel?] "The Militant Messiah or Flight From The Ghetto". In many
ways, it is the best book on the subject. Also, see Gershom Scholem
"The Messianic Idea in Judaism". Scholem has several chapters on
the Frankist Movement.
The Frankists actually started in the 1730s in what is now Ukraine.
I won't belabor the point, but Jacob Frank started it by convincing
people that he was the reincarnation of a man named Baruchya Russo,
a Bulgarian Jew who had headed up an offshoot of the Sabbataean
Movement. This movement was founded by Shabbatai Sevi (see Gershom
Scholem's book by the same name) in the 1600s. So not only do we
have the Frankist Sabbataean movement antedating the Bavarian
Illuminati, but probably starting at the same time as the
publication of the Rosicrucian Letters and centered around the
messianic expectations concerning what came to be known as the
Anno Mirabilis (Year of Wonders) 1666.
