*** Geologists speculate on Noah's flood. NEW YORK (AP) - What?! New scien-
tific proof demonstrating that the great biblical Flood really *did* occur
thousands of years ago? Such is the sensational but speculative implication
in a new book "Noah's Flood: The New Scientific Discoveries About the Event
That Changed History" by William Ryan and Walter Pitman. The authors are
adjunct geology professors at Columbia U. and senior scientists at Lamont-
Doherty Earth Observatory. Geological research does find reason to believe
there was indeed a vast, sudden and deadly flood around 5,600 B.C., close
enough to the possible time of Noah to fascinate biblical literalists and
liberals alike. Till now the best stab at modern scientific corroboration of
the Flood was work of British archeologist Charles Leonard Woolley published
in 1929. http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2558148188-e9d
: Since the Noachian Flood legend was originally Sumerian, predating Hebrew
chronicling by a couple millennia, does this evidence verify non-Biblical
accounts rather than Judeo/Xian/Muslim doctrines? Does it matter? Really? -R

: Are unpiratable, unbreakable, absolutely secure systems possible? Is there
a Santa Claus? Is privacy an illusion, a commodity, a process, a drama? -Ric
# CANADA'S GRID A-OK FOR Y2K. The Canadian Electricity Association promises
a warm and bright Year 2000 for those north of the 49th parallel. Some power

*** FDA issues warning on GBL chemical. WASHINGTON (AP) People should not
consume a chemical widely sold in health food stores and over the Internet
that is linked to one death and 54 cases of severe reactions including
seizures and comatose-like states. The chemical - sold as a dietary supple-
ment and under half a dozen names including GBL and Blue Nitro - claims to
have such effects as building muscle, enhancing sexual performance and red-
ucing stress. Instead, GBL can act on the central nervous system to threaten
life. See http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2558142728-208

has been punctured by a painful article in *The Boston Herald* (of all
places)... See http://www.blather.net/archives2/issue2no35.html

act/feel/smell/taste/sound different than US, Japanese, Ozzie UFOs? Why? -R

4. PODKLETNOV GRAVITY SHIELD: NASA INVESTS ANOTHER $600,000. A Small Busi-
ness Innovation Research grant went to Superconductive Components in Colum-
bus, OH to make a 12-inch superconductive disk for an experimental shield.
It's a coveted Phase II award, which goes to the top projects. A 6-inch
shield built under Phase I didn't work (WN 15 May 98), but NASA, which has
been working on this for 4 years, hopes a bigger one will. The Columbus
Dispatch quotes a NASA official: "Let your imagination run wild. What could
you do if you could cut gravity 50 percent or negate it altogether?" Well,
for one thing you could build a perpetual motion machine, in violation of
the First Law of Thermodynamics.
: What would *you* do with antigravity? Would the world become like the
Jetsons, or Ren & Stimpy, or what? Would you float into space? Please? -Ric
5. HYDRINOS: HONEY, I SHRUNK THE HYDROGEN! BlackLight Power is relocating to
the Princeton, NJ area, having purchased a building for $2M where RCA once
built satellites(WN 8 Jan 99). Randall Mills, who says he has a technique
for getting hydrogen into a state below the ground state, explained to the
Princeton Packet that "It's the most important discovery of all time... up
there with fire." Back when BLP was HydroCatalysis, Mills sold one of his
cells to NASA. I guess they're still testing it.
: If we shrink all the hydrogen, won't the universe collapse? Should we do
an Environmental Impact Statement first? If an EIS had been required first,
would he have fire now? Has NASA ever tested fire for safety & efficacy? -R
