The following is from the url www.racism.com

"Then there is the short story Dance Monkey; a tale of a young man
from Alabama who suffered from schizophrenia. The story of Ray was similar to
many people who come to this grand metropolis of ours full of ambition and
hope. Raymond with the care of an able doctor and his loving wife, had
appeared to overcome this most feared of the mental illnesses. Bearing a
quiet confidence born of having won this struggle, and with a loving wife by
his side, Ray made the northern trek. Their saga....another of a family
facing the disquiet of the Mass Production Of Mental Illness..."

Raymond in the short story is a young man who suffers from
schizophrenia.
Through the use of medication, and the help of his family Raymond overcame
the most outward aspects of this dread symptom cluster and appeared to have
to gained the upperhand on this ailment. That is until he and his family
'came up north' and moved into an inner city area where what is called
'psychiatric sharecropping' was booming on a large scale. Then a new set of
different voices started coming to Raymond. But not the kind he had
overcome with the use of medication, 'GOOD THERAPY' and family support 'It
was unsettling.....'

Gene, You can't lump all the 'voice' hearing into one category. The first
question you have to ask; Is it a problem?? In the Journal Perceptual And
Motor Skills in 1993, an article stated some people can pick up audio
sublimination far easier than others. That is they listened to a tape and told
the examiner what was being said 'behind the masking sound '. At Long Island
University here in New York City there was a lot work going on in this area a
few years back(80's). Also to the surprise of some people musicians were not
overepresented in the of folks picking up the subliminal message.

Then where is the problem with hearing voices? It does not really become
a problem until the individual develops feelings of being controlled and of
course the corresponding symptom of psychological pain that can develop for
obvious reasons. Or the individual feels he or she is being harassed by the
voice(s).

But what about Raymond? I happen to know his story in detail. From the
local yokel therapist who were running the sharecropping operation in the
'hood' to the medical doctors who are now becoming aware of this hustle and
are trying to put a stop to it. How would you help old Ray? Believe me when I
say...He took his medication religiously especially when the new set of
'wildly different' voices started.

Well ?

A hint....so you won't stumble on this one. Some doctors picked it up right
away.
