-Caveat Lector-

NOTES:

(1) In Old English, *hengist* ="stallion" and *horsa*="mare". Three guesses as
to what was going on between the two Saxon chieftans...

(2) The way the Danes and the Irish mutually mangled each other languages was
the stuff of legend. The first Danish governor of Dublin was a prince by the
name of Olaf. "Olaf" spelled phonetically in Irish is Amhlaibh. When the Irish
monks, who were far more literate than their Continental co-religionists,
compiled the first chronicles of Ireland, they naturally spelled Olaf's name
"Amhlaibh" so they could pronounce it correctly. Sooner or later, however, a
copy of the Irish book (which was actually in Latin, of course), made its way
to Germany, where a scholar named Saxo Grammaticus rewrote it so the Danes
were the heroes instead of the Irish. Since Saxo couldn't speak or read Irish,
he "improved" the spelling of Olaf's name from Amhlaibh to "Amlethus". A
couple of centuries later, an English playwright named William Shakespeare
read Saxo's book, liked the plot, but "improved" the spelling of Olaf's name
once again...to "Hamlet".

(3) "Tudor" in Tudor England was actually pronounced in the Welsh fashion:
"tidder". An awful lot of Welshmen moved to London with the Tudors, which is
one reason that it is possible to *speak* English or *spell* English...but not
both.
