-Caveat Lector- >Why is it like rape? Why is it not like rape? It what way are they similar? In what way are they different? It appears to me that both of you need a lesson in rhetoric. I did NOT say it was "like rape." Please don't put words in my mouth. I said it was "precisely and exactly the same thing AS rape." This is quite different from being "like rape." Really. Check in Strunk and White. Sorry if I was confusing; I'll try to be plainer. I am not saying that "somebody else, not you, deciding what goes and does not go into your body" IS rape. I'm saying that it and "rape" are both varieties of the same thing. The "thing" in this case is "an imposition of the will of the strong on the bodies of the weak by force or by threat of force." Perhaps you find this definition overly broad. It does, after all, define everyday life for most people. Perhaps you don't mind being trapped in a world where your time, the very stuff of life itself, is a commodity and where you and I are basically livestock, owned, herded, fleeced and slaughtered by the tiny handful of men with any real power, a world where even drawing breath and eating means that carcinogenic toxins enter your body against your will. Perhaps you hold the inherent sanctity of your right by birth to your own physical autonomy in so little regard that only the most egregious violations even offend you. Perhaps you think the definition of "rape" should be limited to "forced penetration." OK, let's see how it looks then. Rape isn't about penetration of your body's orifices vs. no penetration penetration of your body's orifices. Rape is about not being able to choose for yourself whether or not it happens. So too is being told (at gunpoint, no less) which drugs MUST enter your body and which drugs MUST NOT enter your body. The defining element of the interaction is not the ingestion or the failure to ingest the pot, the Laetril, the anthrax vaccine, whichever biowar toxin the government happens to be testing on us this week, or whatever. The defining element is the gun. I honestly thought that calling it a "thing" would make it easier for people to understand. Frankly, I'm fairly amazed that anybody smart enough to hook up a modem would find the familial resemblance of rape and the War On (Some) Drugs as anything else but self evident. I am not referring to cavity searches, either. If bodily cavities were as far into our bodies and lives that the WO(S)D reached, it would be essentially a subcategory of rape in the same way that rape with an object is a subcategory of rape. But no. These corrupt, self righteous, hypocritical, fascist stooges aren't satisfied merely to be able to force their way at gunpoint into your most intimate orifices. Given the chance they'll reach clear into your veins and take your blood, just as if they owned it. Perhaps they do. Even in his most paranoid moments, Orwell never imagined that one day Big Brother would routinely search inside people's bladders for evidence of thought crime. But here we are. Not only are the defining activities of both rapists and drug warriors merely separate instances of the same "thing," the perps are the same kind of people. They are unwelcome intruders using force to impose their will on bodies not their own. Bad enough to share a world with people like this, but to give them political power is folly most grave.
