Phone mix-up puts B.C. town in impeachment debate
REVELSTOKE, B.C., Feb 12, 1999 (The Canadian Press via COMTEX) --
Residents of this Rocky Mountain town literally have an inside line on
what Americans think about Bill Clinton's impeachment.

Through a mix-up in the long-distance phone lines between the United
States and Canada, Revelstoke's community centre has been getting calls
intended to give Americans an outlet for their views on the Clinton
situation.

Alan Chell, Revelstoke's parks and recreation co-ordinator, said the
phone calls have been coming in since December.

At least 1,000 calls have come through the community centre.

''Around Christmas the phone was really mixed-up,'' he said.

''We were getting 100 calls a day from all over the United States.''

The number of calls dropped off over the weeks but Chell still found
himself answering four calls last week.

''It's slowed down now,'' he said. ''We're not sure it's that because
interest (in Clinton) is dying out or if the problem is getting
corrected.''

Callers from Pennsylvania, Vermont, New York and other states either
ask it they've reached an NBC-TV phone-in line or start right away
giving their opinions of the Clinton issue, said Chell.

''What we found out is the American public definitely likes to take the
opportunity to let their thoughts be known,'' he said.

When they learned where their call ended up, reactions were mixed, he
said. Often it was ''Where is Revelstoke?'' and ''Where is British
Columbia?''

''One woman said, 'You're so lucky to live in Canada where normal
things go on,''' Chell said.

Officials of the American TV network had no comment on the mix-up.
