An outbreak of a disease, yet undiagnosed, has affected the population of the
Darwaz district of Badakhshan, Afghanistan, which borders on Tajikistan.

According to Afghan diplomatic sources in Dushanbe, the epidemic, which is
characterized by high temperature, digestion problems and gut colic, has
already claimed the lives of several hundred people aged between one and 70
years.

The outbreak of the epidemic has been confirmed for ITAR-TASS by the chairman
of the Tajik Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defence, Mahmadruzi
Iskandarov.  He said that, according to his employees in the mountainous
Badakhshan [Autonomous] Region of Tajikistan, bordering on Afghanistan, "a
disease, which according to preliminary symptoms could be a plague, has been
raging" in the border area for several days...
