Almost right, not quite... Fluoridation originated in El Paso, because
the local water supply has naturally high fluoride levels, and the
local population has low levels of dental caries [cavities], and some
researchers put those facts together, did some research... and now
fluoridated water and toothpastes are used worldwide. The tradeoffs?
A much higher percentage of people with cavities and dental infections
DIED or were otherwise seriously impacted by their infections, than
show any side-effects that can be attributed to the fluoride. This
cost/benefit ratio is similar to that involved in the issue of adding
preservatives to foods - many more people used to DIE from eating
contaminated foods, than now show any reactions to the preservatives.
So, are fluorides or preservatives universally beneficial to every
human who consumes them? No, because humans differ, our biochemistry
varies over certain ranges from person to person - but generally, a
lot fewer people are harmed by the presence of such substances, than
by their absence. So the public-health approach is to support the
measures that produce the most benefit for the most people - and if
you look at mortality figures over the last 100-150 years, you'll
see that approach pays off, statistically at least. If you have
