*** Body-part replacement studied. WASHINGTON (AP) Researchers have isolated
from adult bone marrow a master cell that can be directed to grow bone or
cartilage, a laboratory feat that experts call a major step toward making
replacement parts for ailing or aged bodies. The researchers at Osiris
Therapeutics in Baltimore isolated a single cell, called a mesenchymal stem
cell, and then grew it into a colony of more than a million cells that could
be induced to produce bone, cartilage or fat. Other experts in the rapidly
expanding field of stem cell research applauded the achievement. See

*** Docs: Don't plan New Year's surgery. DENVER (AP) Because of uncertainty
over what will happen when 1999 becomes 2000, many doctors, hospitals and
medical organizations are advising patients not to schedule elective surgery
during the first few days of January. Doctors attending an American Medical
Association regional seminar in Denver recently were urged not to consider
elective surgery early in January. There is optimism hospitals and other
institutions will have their computers checked and ready for the changeover

99% of natural increase - the difference between births and deaths - occurs
